Essay writing straddles many boundaries and many genres: from the academic to the anecdotal. This course examines how the modern essay has changed shape over the years, and reveals what Australian editors, both for print and online, seek for publication. This course is designed for you to investigate the mechanics of quality essay writing, learn research methods, practice writing exercises, discuss structure, tone and voice – with the goal to produce publishable essays. Come prepared to write.

Mandy Brett is a Senior Editor with Text Publishing, working on fiction and trade non-fiction titles. She has also worked in Indigenous publishing and in small magazine publishing. Among other speaking and teaching roles, she is the regular guest lecturer in fiction editing for the RMIT Grad Dip in Editing and Publishing.
